At the beginning of the 20th Century, Céret, along with Collioure, 30 km away on the coast, became the two places where the best known and most exciting artists of the day gathered to paint and get up to scandalous antics which of of course kept them well in the public eye even as far away as Paris which was probably their intention... Many years later Picasso would come back and be instrumental in the setting up, in the heart of the town, the Museum of Modern Art; a "must visit" for everyone who comes to the region.
